Help. Short answers.

Using Driff

What is Driff?

A quiet app for giving your time to a few things you care about, like an instrument, reading or classes. You set a rough weekly amount for each. Driff shows which one is falling behind, times your sessions, and keeps each day as a journal entry.

There are no schedules and no streaks. Big days and empty days both count.

How does it work day to day?

Now puts the area pulling hardest first, with why in a line and its week as a ring, then the rest of the week ranked the same way. Start, or just five minutes, and stay as long as it’s working. A bell can split a session into rounds and breaks.

Calendar holds fixed things, by month, and the week plan as its Week view. Journal keeps your days: a few lines, the photos you took and the day’s song. Rhythm is a look back at where the week went: its shape, each area against its aim, and when in the day you worked.

It comes in three looks, chosen in Settings: Stone, warm and dark like this site; Paper, its light side; and Focus, plain black and white.

Does the week plan tell me what to do?

No. It suggests how your weekly amounts could fit into the days left, inside your wake and sleep times, and it never blocks or nags. Change it, recalculate it, or ignore it.

Can I share a day?

Any day or week can become a card, in six layouts: its shape, a photo, the day’s photos, rings against your aims, your own words, or, with Plus, artwork made for it. Each comes in Stone, Paper or Black, saved as a picture, 1080 × 1920, to share wherever you like.

Which music services work?

Paste a Spotify, YouTube or Deezer link, or search for a song. It plays in that service’s own player, with no account or login in Driff. Looking up a song needs a connection; everything else works offline.

Your data and devices

Where is my data stored?

On your device, and nowhere else. There are no accounts and no servers, and Driff doesn’t collect analytics or track you. Photos are kept inside the app, so clearing your camera roll won’t remove them.

A few things need a connection, like looking up a song or a packaged food, but what you log stays on your device. The privacy policy lists each one.

How do I back up?

Settings → Back up. The first time, you choose a folder: a Drive folder, a synced folder, a USB drive. After that, backing up only adds what’s new.

How do I move to a new phone or computer?
  1. On the old device: Settings → Back up, to a folder the new device can reach.
  2. On the new device: Settings → Import, and pick that folder.

Importing merges. Whatever changed more recently is kept, so importing twice is safe. A phone’s backup folder opens on a computer as it is.

Updating Android from 0.01

0.02 can’t install over 0.01, so move your data across by hand:

  1. In 0.01: Settings → Export. Save the .drift.json file somewhere off the phone and check it’s there.
  2. Uninstall 0.01. This deletes its data, which is why the export comes first.
  3. Install 0.02, then Settings → Import an old .drift.json, and pick the file.

From 0.02 on, updates install over the top and keep your data.

How do I delete my data?

Settings → Erase everything deletes every session, journal entry, photo and setting on that device. Uninstalling Driff does the same. Backups you made stay in the folder you chose until you delete them.

If you shared anything to Health Connect, you can remove it there, from Driff’s page under App permissions.

Is there an iPhone or Apple Watch version?

Not yet. The iPhone app comes later, and Apple Watch after it. Free on Android and Linux. Windows, Mac and iPhone soon.

Plugins and AI

What are plugins?

Tools built into Driff for things that need more than a timer: Anki for flashcards, Fitness for workouts, Health for sleep, water, mood and meals, Practice for an instrument, and Focus on a computer. Each works inside your sessions, so its time counts toward an area like any other. See them on the Plugins page.

They’re off until you turn them on in Settings → Plugins. Turning one off hides it and keeps its data.

Do plugins cost anything?

No. They’re part of Driff and free on every device. What you put in them goes into your backups like everything else.

Can I bring my Anki decks?

Yes. Import an Anki package (.apkg or .colpkg) with its images, sounds and progress, so a card due today in Anki is due today in Driff. Text and CSV exports work too, Quizlet’s included.

What does Focus do?

On a computer, while a session runs, a small ring sits above every window on every workspace, with pause, break and done. With Plus, it also notices when the window in front has drifted from what the session is for: the ring fills with red, and once it’s full the clock waits and Driff says so, once. Get back to it and the red drains away. When a page of work goes quiet, a tutor checks in and nudges you toward the next step, never the answer.

It reads the window in front from your desktop. GNOME on Wayland doesn’t share that, so there the timer works but nothing is judged. On a Mac, reading window titles needs Screen Recording permission for Driff.

Does Driff send anything to AI?

Only with Plus, and only the features you turn on. Focus sends, during a session, the area and what counts for it, the windows you said count, and the window’s app and title with emails and long numbers taken out; a picture of the window only if you turn that on. Driff’s own windows, password managers and private browser windows are never sent, and nothing is kept but your minutes.

Ask Driff sends your areas and aims, your sessions, what’s coming up and what plugins keep, when you ask; your journal and notes only if you share them, photos never. Meals from a photo send that photo, and card artwork sends where the time went or the photos you choose. Requests go through Driff’s relay to the AI provider and back, and neither keeps what was in them. More on the AI page.

Is the AI included, or do I pay per use?

It’s included in Plus, with no keys to set up and no meter to watch. Every AI feature draws from one allowance a month, shown in the app as a percentage and sized for a full day of use every day. If it ever runs out, the AI rests until the next month; everything else keeps working. See Pricing.

Watches

Which watches work?

Wear OS watches, with an app, a tile and a complication, and 115 Garmin watches: Forerunner, fēnix, epix, Instinct, Venu, vívoactive and more, any with Connect IQ 3.2 or later. Start an area, pause, set the bell and take breaks from the wrist. A session timed away from the phone arrives with its own times. Apple Watch comes after the iPhone app.

How do I get the watch app?

Both pair with the Android app. The Wear OS app comes with Driff on Google Play, and the Garmin app will be in the Connect IQ Store, with Garmin Connect on your phone. Both are coming soon; the download page says when.

Can Driff use the health data my watch already collects?

On Android, through Health Connect. Garmin, Fitbit, Samsung, Pixel and others write there, and Driff can bring in your sleep, weight, workouts and steps, with the night’s details when your watch measures them. It can also share your meals, water, weight and workouts back. Each is off until you turn it on, and all of it stays on your phone. The privacy policy lists exactly what’s read and written.

Sync and pricing

Can my devices stay in sync?

Not automatically yet: back up on one device and import on the other, for free. Sync is coming, end-to-end encrypted, in the Sync and Plus plans. See Pricing.

What does Driff cost?

Nothing on one device, plugins included. Sync is $4 a month or $36 a year. Plus, with Sync and the AI, is $12 a month or $96 a year, and free for the first 14 days. See Pricing.
